Matt Hagan Wins Historic 1,000th NHRA Funny Car Race at Pomona as Tony Stewart Racing Delivers Statement Weekend

Hagan drove the TSR Dodge//SRT Hellcat to a milestone victory over Ron Capps, Leah Pruett secured the No. 1 Top Fuel qualifying spot, and team owner Tony Stewart added a Top Fuel win to cap a huge weekend at the NHRA Winternationals.

POMONA, Calif. Matt Hagan drove the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car to victory Sunday in the 1,000th NHRA Funny Car race, beating Ron Capps in the final round at the 66th Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.
Hagan posted a 3.876-second pass at 330.39 mph to hold off Capps, who ran 3.893 at 334.32 mph, in a milestone final featuring two of the class’s most accomplished active drivers.
The win was Hagan’s first of the 2026 season, the 56th national event victory of his career, his fifth Winternationals title, and his eighth overall victory at Pomona. He also won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday and moved into a tie with Capps for the Funny Car points lead after three races.
Hagan defeated Spencer Hyde, Jason Rupert and J.R. Todd earlier in eliminations before closing out the historic win against Capps.
Leah Pruett added to Tony Stewart Racing’s strong weekend by claiming the No. 1 Top Fuel qualifying spot in the TSR Rinnai Dodge dragster with a 3.724-second run, her first top qualifying position since June 2023 at Norwalk, Ohio.
Pruett advanced through the first round before losing a quarterfinal matchup to Justin Ashley despite posting the quicker 3.703 to Ashley’s 3.720, with Ashley advancing on a reaction-time advantage.
Team owner Tony Stewart also won in Top Fuel for Elite Motorsports, defeating Ashley in the final with a 3.683-second run at 332.51 mph. The victory was Stewart’s third career NHRA win, his first at Pomona, and the first Top Fuel victory for Elite Motorsports.
The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series resumes April 24-26 at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte for the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals.
